Presentations

HAMISH COATES reveals insights from a large research project being conducted to analyse the presidents of global universities and their views on the sustainability and higher education. This mainly involves their own development, their work, and their leadership of sustainability.

JANINE MC GINN will provide significant insights into the attributes of a climate which might promote and sustain academic creativity and innovation in our higher educational institutions.  Cognisant of the many challenges currently facing the higher education sector, she establishes how academic creative and innovative endeavour is supported and sustained.

LIVIU MATEI emphasis that we are currently in the middle of a crisis of academic freedom in Europe. As for her, this crisis is specific to Europe, she will discuss the need to chart a course for academic freedom in the EHEA, both in an intellectual and regulatory order.

BEHAILU KORMA aims to give incite on current Ethiopian higher education institutions organization and to suggest reorganization of the existing system through differentiation. The aim of Reorganizing Ethiopian Public Higher Education Institutions through Differentiation is to achieve diversity in the HE system as a whole and with respect to all core functions.

Speakers

Hamish Coates is a Tenured Professor at Tsinghua University’s Institute of Education, Director of the Higher Education Research Division, and Deputy Director of the Tsinghua University Global Research Centre for the Assessment of College and Student Development. He was Professor of Higher Education at the University of Melbourne, Founding Director of Higher Education Research at the Australian Council for Educational Research, and Program Director at the LH Martin Institute for Tertiary Leadership and Management. He concentrates on improving the quality and productivity of higher education.

An entrepreneur prior to her role in higher education, Dr Janine Mc Ginn is chair of the MSc in Digital Media and Marketing in the School of Business in Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Ireland. Janine has extensive SME strategy; curricula and programme design experience. Currently supervising several post-graduate research projects, Janine is motivated by entrepreneurship and innovation.  Her research interests include female leadership in regional politics; change leadership; strategic marketing and creative organisational culture.  Her PhD awarded in 2018 by the University of Lincoln focused on the development of a model for creative climates in higher education organisations.

Liviu Matei is Provost of Central European University and a Professor of Higher Education Policy. He taught at universities in Romania, Hungary and the U.S., consulted extensively in the area of higher education policy and conducted applied policy research projects for the World Bank, UNESCO, OSCE, the Council of Europe, the European Commission, and other international organizations (intergovernmental and non-governmental), national authorities and universities from Europe and Asia. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the American University of Central Asia and serves on the editorial boards of the Internationalisation of Higher Education Journal and the European Journal of Higher Education.

Behailu Korma got MA in Special Needs Education and MA in Linguistics from Addis Ababa University. As a faculty member of Samara University, he was involved in academics, research and community service for 8 years. Since 2016, he has been working as researcher at Higher Education Strategy Centre. Alongside, he worked as Chairperson for the national ECCE curriculum committee and deputy manager for the project 15 Years Education Development Roadmap Preparation (2017-2030). Currently, he is a coordinator of National Academic Digital Repository of Ethiopia; team member in the National Research Infrastructure Roadmap of Ethiopia (2021-2025) and a team member of Education Resource Mobilization Strategy preparation study.
