“Cross-employment” indicates that a person has different employment statuses with different institutions, however at the same time. There can be simultaneous “multi-employment” or “cross-employment” of the members of the academic profession across several organizations or institutions within and outside of higher education, for example with a university and non-university organization. Cross-employment supports application-oriented and innovative third mission activities of higher education institutions, but supports also the disciplinary and interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary development of competences and skills of the individual academic faculty member, by this contributing to the employability of academics.
