This study addresses the implications of conceptualising universities as responsible for regional innovation. It aims to explore the paradox of introducing governance solutions that miss the target of enhancing the co-production of innovation by universities and their regional partners. The research draws on a range of neo-institutional concepts and an interview-based case study of the institute of innovation matchmakers in Aalborg University and North Denmark Region. The study reveals that, to be successful in their ambition of creating structured entry points and coordinating interactions for regional innovation, leaders on both sides need to capitalise on historical practices, identities, and cultures.
