Habits and attitudes associated with success in professions related to Institutional Research

​The already high demands on Institutional Research Professionals (IRPs) has been increasing exponentially with disruptive innovation, advanced learning analytics, big data, the internet, political pressure and business model challenges. IR literature calls for even more integrated, leadership and advocacy roles from the profession. Few people have the required skill-set and experience to fulfil these responsibilities. It is also attitudes, habits and behaviours, which often determine whether this potential is realised. This research examines whether there are cluster(s) of critical habits and attitudes associated with success as an IRP. Such knowledge may inform and support the appointment, development and formal training of IRPs.  The Shadowmatch© tool, along with a career and biographic survey, will assist in determining if there are profiles (cluster(s) of habits behaviours and attitudes) associated with success as an IRP. The study is in the initial phase, focusing on institutions in Southern Africa; further phases will include Canada, followed by global participation allowing for comparative analysis. The study will result in profiles of habits, behaviours and attitudes of successful IRPs to facilitate recruitment, insight and development.  Session participants will have an opportunity to participate in this study if they so wish.
