Linking HE and the Labour Market in Mozambique: The contribution of Engineering, Social Sciences and Humanities

​Drawing from a tracey research methodology of Mozambican graduated students in Engineering, Social Sciences & Humanities at Eduardo Mondlane and Pedagogical universities, this paper embarks on investigating the contribution HE makes to the labor market. It is grounded on the perspective of understanding why is public debate increasingly questioning the interconnection between universities and employment in a context of still an elitist system. In bringing such new method, the paper captures two spurring notions for Mozambique namely that despite public debate developing the view that surging graduations leads to unemployment, there are variations in terms of institution of instruction, field of specialization and period participants enrolled in HE. Secondly, there has been a dominant misconception at the national level in viewing universities solely as a guarantee for employability. The perspective of cultivation of knowledge, culture and skills necessary for adjustment in different contexts was least privileged.
