This paper explores the perceptions of Portuguese students, enrolled in industrial doctorates, regarding the potential conflicts that may arise from their supervision, their research topic and their research outputs. It resorts to data collected from Focus Groups and subjected to content analysis. Findings suggest that Industrial doctoral students recognise a divergence between university and industry, not only regarding the research topic (constrained academic freedom), but also the research outputs, particularly the industrial need to keep data confidential and the university demand to disseminate knowledge via the publication of articles.
