Rethinking Responsibility in a Degree Apprenticeship programme

​Degree Apprenticeships, launched by the UK government in 2015 to help address high-level skills gaps by tailoring learning to specific business needs, are a relatively new educational route in England. Students combine full-time paid work with part-time university study on a course that is created in partnership between university and employer, and learning takes place using a study mode - distance learning, blended learning, or block-mode learning - that best suits the employer''s requirements. This paper discusses the unique challenges of developing responsible teaching and learning for a military Degree Apprenticeship: the diasporic nature of the student cohort, the students’ goal-oriented style, and their varied educational background all require a rethinking of a responsible pedagogical approach. We discuss how innovative digital and pedagogical techniques can help meet those challenges.
